BROADS’ WORD ENSEMBLE ANNOUNCES LOVES ADVENTURES
A Proud Participant of the 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival
Love is a battlefield, and Margaret Cavendish was one to take this literally in her 1600s classic, Loves Adventures. The epic follows Lady Orphant, who joins the army to pursue the man she loves, while Lady Bashful fights at home against suitors she has no desire to marry. Known for being a feminist of her time, Cavendish used humor to challenge gender norms in a war many women are still waging.
Broads’ Word Ensemble is proud to return for their third Hollywood Fringe Festival. In 2015, this all-female production company made a splash with their inaugural production, Fifty Shades of Shrew. Last year they challenged casting norms with Must be Comfortable With. This year, they’re celebrating women’s contributions to the classic canon with Margaret Cavendish’s Loves Adventures.
They have infused Loves Adventures with 1980s overtones – not only the fun of Rubik’s Cubes, cootie catcher fortunes, and crimped hair – but also with a nod to this period’s evolution of social attitudes regarding gender, class, and race.
